Stunnel is a program that allows you to encrypt arbitrary TCP connections in SSL (Secure Socket Layer) available on both Unix and Windows. Stunnel can allow you to secure non-SSL-aware daemons and protocols (such as POP, IMAP, LDAP, etc.) by having Stunnel provide encryption, requiring no changes to the daemon code. This requires an X.509 certificate, if you want to do it right.
TLS stands for Transport Layer Security. TLS and its predecessor SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) are protocols for cryptography to provide secure internet communication over the internet. TLS and SSL use X.509 certificates in carrying out their encryption.
Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a communication technology that makes it possible to connect to a public network and use it to be able to join a local network.
